Year Two chronicles Batman's attempt to bring down a sickle-wielding vigilante, the Reaper, who kills criminals...and any police who get in his way. Concluding that the only way to stop the heavily armoured Reaper is by upping his own non-lethal arsenal, Batman starts carrying a gun. And since the Reaper targets the underworld, Batman allies himself with the mob to set a trap. This puts him at odds with newly appointed Police Commissioner Gordon...and partners him with hitman Joe Chill, who, twenty years before, murdered Batman's parents. Batman plots to kill Chill (who's ignorant of their past history) once the Reaper business is over. When the climax comes, involving Chill, the Reaper, and the whole question of violence, it concludes with Bruce burying his gun, and (presumably) vowing never to carry one again.

During the early days of his career, Batman is still an outlaw. Strange works to uncover Batman's secret identity, while persuading Cort to prowl the night as an even more vicious vigilante in an attempt to discredit Batman. With such men allied against him, Batman must continue to protect Gotham...while attempting to forge a tentative alliance with James Gordon.

Venom first battled Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #300. His archenemy, and figurehead for the McFarlane era of Spider-Man, Venom was born of an alien costume Spider-Man picked up in Secret Wars #8. The costume turned out to be a living alien symbiote that bonded with Spidey, and almost proved the adage that curiosity does indeed, kill the cat…or spider. With the help of Reed Richards, the symbiote was forced off of Spider-Man, but then bonded with Eddie Brock, who was then a reporter for the Daily Globe. Fueled by Brock’s mild paranoia and dislike of Spider-Man, Venom-Brock became a (literally) drooling monster intent on the annihilation of Spider-Man.
Along the way, Venom asexually reproduced, with its “offspring” bonding with serial killer Cletus Kasaday to form the creature known as Carnage – who made Venom look like a schoolboy.
